THE SWING CIRCLE AND ITS RADIUS

The golf swing is a circular action. A circle, by definition, must have a constant radius. The center of this circle is the C7/T1 vertebrae interface of the spine (known as the cervicothoracic junction, or CTJ). This is the point about which the neck and shoulders are free to turn. The swing circle is also in motion along the plane of the shoulders because during the downswing transition, the weight shifts to the lead leg – which causes the circle to undergo a translation movement.

This translation movement can be seen in tracing the swing path of elite golf players as shown above. The swing tracer shows the different movements of the circular path in the backswing and downswing – the same radius extension is maintained at impact as was made at address. This promotes consistent hitting and squaring of the clubface on the tangent line of the swing circle which intersects the ball.
